Building the Building
The structure is a five-sided kiosk made of wood painted highlights, a take out window with the usual frills, and metal decorations along the eaves and main lines of the roof. The menu is a painted and ornate piece of work on the opposite side of the take-out window, where “customers” place their order and ride along the low border made of red cinderblocks with silk flowers poking out.
The main McLightenment sign, made by metal sculptor Tony D’aula consists of a sheet metal ‘M’ (looking suspiciously like an OM on it’s side) within a halo of fire. The sign has a concrete base as a counterweight. Guy-lines extending from where the line meets the post hold the sign up in all four directions. One line touches down at the peak of the roof of the kiosk, one to the cinderblock path, sunken with a piece of rebar, and two to the playa. The lines are decorated with long strands of prayer flags sporting the McLightenment logo.
The main gas line for the sign, traveling up through the signpost, passes under the drive-thru area and is attached to a tank within the structure itself. The tank is in a separate ventilated “room” to keep it safe. The sign is be lit sporadically through the course of a night but it will not be lit for the entirety of the event. It is only be lit when someone is minding the store. There is a fire extinguisher inside the kiosk should it be necessary.
